Enterprise Web App Prototyping for the Cloud

VMware UX and Design Prototyping

The Brief

VMware came to MJD with a user experience challenge to make their cloud hosting web application platform easier to use. Surprisingly provisioning your own cloud server instance was not an easy task and included a lot of options for users to select. MJD worked through our initial user experience phase, including clickable wireframe prototypes to test against, followed by interface design options to apply and test.

User Experience

We worked through our user experience process that included:

  • Overall business strategy and goals of the update
  • Initial user and stakeholder interviews to get insight into the application
  • Information architecture and content mapping exercises
  • Initial wireframe prototypes to test selected actions against
  • Technical specification annotations and guides

Interface Design

Using an agile design process methodology we worked to showcase different web application interface elements to test against, as well as a VMware branded digital experience. Design elements included:

  • Drop down menus
  • Toggle filters vs. button push
  • Colors of buttons and layout placement
  • Form field and form process
  • Overall color palette

Results

While we cant publish the exact results of the prototype we can share:

  • Agile prototype user experience elements and user interface design options resulted in a better overall web application experience for users.
  • Increase speed to market by using our team to augment their internal team’s expertise.
  • Additional design assets created that carried across brand and used in other initiatives.

Business Web application design is too often neglected. I see a lot of applications that don’t meet the needs of either businesses or users and thus contribute to a loss of profit and poor user experience. It even happens that designers are not involved in the process of creating applications at all, putting all of the responsibility on the shoulders of developers.

Web applications require a higher level of involvement and knowledge of the system on the part of the user. They don’t just stumble upon the application, do their work and bounce off. They use it as a tool to perform critical business tasks in their daily work. In the end, they cannot easily discontinue using the application and switch to another if they don’t like how it’s working, as is the case with basic websites.

Meaningful Connections

At MJD we are striving to give meaning to the digital connections between people. We aim to elicit emotion when someone uses a digital product, experience or platform that we’ve designed and built. It could be something simple like a beautifully designed user interface that makes working with a smartphone exceptionally easy. It could be something hard like creating a Store of the Future where little girls can fall in love with a doll and be inspired to create their own strong path in this big world.

Digital Innovation Agency

Digital innovation is disrupting entire industries, transforming consumer behavior and influencing the way people interact with brands and products. In our 24/7 world, companies are leveraging digital technologies to create tremendous value, efficiencies and new revenue models while their customers expect ever more personalized and engaging experiences.
