Course Description

More than ever, the cornerstone of every targeted marketing plan should be a Web marketing strategy. This course covers Web-site design, search engine optimization, pay-for-click advertising, e-mail marketing, social network marketing and other online marketing elements. In this course, you will review and critique several pre-selected Web sites in a computer lab setting. Guest speakers include several regional experts on various aspects of Internet marketing. Some of the topics include: how to attract more of your targeted customers to your Web site; marketing Web site optimization; the latest research on high performance e-mail campaigns; online and offline advertising and public relations tactics; and tips for increasing site traffic.

Grading and Evaluation:

  1. Grading policy statement: Your grade in Web Marketing Strategies is based on your performance on examinations, case study write-ups, in-class and out-of-class assignments including a final PowerPoint presentation.
  2. Attendance policy: This is meant to be an interactive class and if you miss class, you miss out. You cannot receive credit for in-class participation assignments if you did not attend the class. There is no provision to make up these assignments; however, the course is designed so that you can miss one or two classes and still earn an A. Six one to two page papers are due during the term. These are to be emailed to Jeremy before class. They will not be accepted if they are late. Each is worth 1000 points. The class is designed so you can miss one or two and still receive an A. Late work for the case studies will not be accepted.
  3. Description of midterm and final: There will be a mid-term examination during the term composed of both objective and short essay questions. The midterm is worth 4000 points. To practice for the mid-term we will have a College Bowl competition, similar to a quiz show. You receive 1000 points if you are on the winning team, 500 points if you are on the losing team. No points if you do not attend and participate. Instead of a final examination on the last night of class you are required to present a final project. This will be a 5-minute or shorter PowerPoint presentation on your Web marketing action plan, as taken from the lectures and guest speakers. The bulk should be on action steps you recommend. You need to email Jeremy the PowerPoint. This assignment is designed to demonstrate how well you can integrate and synthesize the ideas presented in the course. The final project is worth 6000 points. Points will be deducted for going over 5 minutes or using zero or multiple Web sites.
  4. Make-up policy for missed exams, assignments: A make up midterm for those who were sick will be given the following week. There is no makeup for missing the final project. Late case studies will not be accepted.
  5. Six of the classes will have discussions, worth 500 participation points per class.
